Workshop Information

Kitchen-garden workshops

Our kitchen-garden workshops are organized not as classes, but instead as a structured conversation that encourages collaboration with the participants. Held in our kitchen, with access to garden spaces as appropriate, our workshops are intimate gatherings of up to eight participants. Workshop topics can be tailored to the specific objectives of your small group.

At The Farm at Long Lane, we are continually researching successful ways of using alternative flours. In particular, we are really focused on the art of combining these important whole grain flours for healthy and tasty baking results. More than ever, and for an array of reasons, many people are choosing to consume diets free of gluten - the result is a gluten-conscious lifestyle. We respect that and we understand that mission. We have a keen interest in expanding knowledge around baking techniques and ingredients that will yield delicious, homemade, consistent results. Much of how gluten-free baking works is diametrically different than “normal” baking, so it provides a surmountable challenge to the willing. We enthusiastically support the idea of providing a forum to learn together.

Our workshops are an opportunity to talk about how we can use ingredients – both familiar and unfamiliar. Beyond the how, we also seek an answer to the whatwhat are these foods and what meaning do they have to us if also observed from a historical context. Our aim is to encourage the appreciation and exploration of local, heirloom foods from the vantage point of a would-be food anthropologist.

As more and more people seek local foods and adopt diets that embrace more diver food sources, it’s a great time to search our collective memories about how foods have been enjoyed and prepared in the past. The variety and diversity of flavors that heirloom produce, grains, and grasses offer, really lends to how we cook and live today. We want to help make that connection.

We’d love to have your participation! If you'd like to inquire about scheduling a workshop, please contact us or call us at 402-452-8004!
